• A1, A2: elementary use - basic level
• B1, B2: free use - intermediate level
• C1, C2: competent use - advanced level

Structure of tests in Germany

German

According to the European frame of reference

Basic Level:
A1

Basic level of the foreign language, a person can respond to simple questions; necessary for the residence permit for foreign spouses.

A2

Basic level of the foreign language, the learner can participate in simple conversations and talk e.g. about himself and his job.

Intermediate Level:
B1

Intermediate level; the learner can talk about topics like work, holidays, dreams and wishes. Often requested for residence permissions.

B2

Intermediate level; necessary for studying in Swiss universities; supported by the Swiss canton of Tessin / Cantone di Ticino.

Advanced Level:
C1

Mothertongue-like knowledge of the language; necessary for Master Degrees in Swiss universities like e.g. Freiburg / Fribourg.

C2

Mothertongue-like knowledge of the language; access to all universities.

TestDaF

TestDaF is hold centrally, world-wide at the same time; it is always corrected in the same way.
There are three different levels (3-5) of the TestDaF, according to the number of points, the students are allowed to study in certain universities. The necessary number of points varies from university to university.
Those tests can be taken in universities and "Volkshochschulen"; that varies from city to city.

DSH

DSH-tests are created individually by the universities. As the level of difficulty varies, applicants should ask if the DSH-tests of another university is recognized.
DSH-tests are held in universities.

ZOP

The ZOP (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung) is widely recognized. It is an old tests (not very frequent in nowadys) it allows the access to German, Austrian and Swiss universities.
