Passato Prossimo and Imperfetto

Both the Passato Prossimo and the Imperfetto are tenses of the past. Thereby their usage can be distinguished:

Imperfetto	Passato Prossimo

Grardavo la TV	quando la mia amica mi ha chiamato.

Imperfetto	English	Passato Prossimo	English

Examples:

Italian	English
Vivevo a Napoli, ma oggi non ci vivo più.	Before I lived in Naples, but today I don’t live there anymore.
Dove l’hai visto?	Where have you seen him?
Non conoscevo questo paese.	He did not know the country.
Ho conosciuto questa ragazza.	I have met this girl.
Sapeva già tutto.	She already knew everything.
L’ha saputo di un’amica.	She learned it from a friend.
Io facevo qualcosa da mangiare e lui mangiava.	I prepared something to eat and he ate (it).

Special verbs: sapere (to know - to have the knowledge) and conoscere (to know - to know someone)
