Futuro Anteriore / Future in the Past

The Futuro Anteriore is the “past of the future”, that means it describes a state or an action that will aready be finished in the future.

Avrà lavorato.

He will have worked.

Negative Declarative Sentence

Non avrà lavorato.

He will not have worked.

Question

Avrà lavorato?

Will he have worked?

Form:

The Futuro Anteriore is made up from a form of “avere” (stative) or “essere” (moving) and the Participio Passato / Past Participle.

Forms of the Auxiliary Verb (Futuro Semplice):

Reflexive Verbs and the Futuro Anteriore

Reflexive verbs always form the Futuro Anteriore with the auxiliary verb “essere” - to be.

Examples:
Domani avrò già dimenticato i problemi di oggi. - Tomorrow I will already have forgotten the problems.
Luigi andrà alla spiaggia dopo che avrà mangiato. - Luigi wil go to be beach after he will have eaten.
Sara e Stella vedranno la sua amica Paola dopo che avranno preso il caffè. - Sara and Stella will see their friend after they will have had their coffee.

 

When is the Participio Passato adjusted?

There is NO adjustment of the Participio Passato when:
- the auxiliary verb “avere” is used > avrà ascoltato

There IS AN adjustment of Participio Passato when:
- the auxiliary verb “essere” is used > sarà caduta
- with reflexive verbs > si sarà alzata
- with supplements (direct object) > l’avrà vista
