How to use the Congiuntivo?

Several expressions in the first part of the sentence are followed by the Congiuntivo. In general, the following cluster can be found:
Preceding Expression + che + Expression with Congiuntivo

The Congiuntivo is used to express:
- a wish
- possibilities, insecurities as well as doubts
- feelings: happiness, fear, ...
- expressions of opinion
- expressions of one’s will

 

Example:

Italian

English

Ho paura che lui non lo capisca.

I am afraid he does not understand.

Spero che venga.

I hope she will come.

Se avessi soldi, mi comprerei una macchina.

If I had money, I would buy a car.

È contenta che ci sia.

I am happy that she is here.

È impossibile che non vada.

It is impossible that he does not go (that it does not work).
