Relative Pronouns / Pronom Relatif

Relative pronouns connect main clauses with subordinate clauses.

Form

French	Explication	Example
qui	who > subject	L’homme qui est là.
que	who > direct object	L’ami que je vois.
dont	whose > genitive, possessive	Le voisin dont j’ai oublié le nom.

“qui” is the subject of the relative clause.
“que” is the direct object of the relative clause.

The substitute form of “qui” is “lequel”

“à + lequel” substitutes “qui”, when subject is a thing.

Relative Pronouns	French	English
à qui	La voisine n’est pas là. Je me suis habitué à la voisine.	The neighbour is not here. I am used to her.
	La voisine à qui je me suis habitué n’est pas là.	The neighbour, who I am used to, is not here.
à laquelle	La voitue ne marche pas. Je me suis habitué à la voiture.	The car does not work. I am used to the car.
	La voiture à laquelle je me suis habitué ne marche pas.	The car, I am used to, does not work.

There is the following scheme for the use of relative pronouns.

qui	who > subject	L’homme qui est là.
que	who > direct object	L’ami que je vois.
à qui auquel, à laquelle, auxquels, auxquelles	who(m) > indirect object	L’amie à qui je pense. La voiture à laquelle je pense.
dont	whose > genitive, possessive	Le voisin dont j’ai oublié le nom.

“dont” - whose

“dont” expresses the possession; in this case, the genitive is used in other languages.

Hereby “de + lequel” can be used as an alternative:

There are two alternatives:

duquel, de laquelle, desquels, desquelles	whose > genitive, possessive	Le voisin duquel j’ai oublié le nom.

Prpposition + “lequel”

à	in, at, to	auquel, ...	La voiture à laquelle je pense.	The car I am thinking of.
avec	with	avec lequel, ...	La personne avec laquelle je parle, s’appelle X.	The name of the person I am talking to is X.
contre	against	contre lequel, ...	L’adversaire contre lequel il a lutté est mort.	The enemy against whom he has fought is dead.
dans	in	dans lequel, ...	La rue dans laquelle il habite est près d’ici.	The street in which he lives is close to here.
de	of, from	duquel, ...	Le voisin duquel j’ai oublié le nom.	The neighbour whose name I have forgotten.
pour	for	pour lequel, ...	Il a perdu le travail pour lequel il avait déménagé à Paris.	He has lost the job for which he had moved to Paris.
sans	without	sans lequel, ...	Le sucre sans lequel il ne bois pas le thé est mauvais pour la santé.	The sugar without which he doesn’t drink the tea is bad for health.
sous	under	sous lequel, ...	Le toit sous lequel il a habité était foutu.	The roof under which he has lived is broken.
sur	on, on top of	sur lequel, ...	Le cheval sur lequel il est assis s’appelle Jean.	The horse on which he is sitting is called Jean.
