Reflexive Pronouns / Reflexivpronomen

Reflexive verbs need a reflexive pronoun / Rückbezügliches Fürwort:
Example: ich wasche mich / ich wasche mir die Hände - I wash myself / I wash my hands (by myself).

Use

Er wäscht die Hände / sie. - He washes the hands / them. > transitive

Er wäscht sich. - He washes himself. > reflexive
If there is only one reflexive object, it is followed by an accusative.

Er wäscht sich die Hände. - He washes the hands by / to himself. > reflexive + object
If there is a reflexive pronoun followed by an object (accusative object / direct object), the reflexive pronoun stands with a dative.

That can be well observed in the 1st and 2nd person singular:

Ich wasche die Hände.
Ich wasche mich.
Ich wasche mir die Hände.

Du wäschst die Hände.
Du wäschst dich.
Du wäschst dir die Hände.
