Hohoho, X-mas is coming,

Augsburg

München / Munich

Hohoho, X-mas is coming,

On Sundays one of the our teachers always organizes trips to different places and cities around Munich. This weekend we went to the wonderful medieval city of Augsburg. It’s only 40 minutes from Munich and has a great X-mas market with a lot of Glühwein, but I’ll come back to that later.

We, a bunch of about 20 people, left some time in the afternoon to discover Augsburg. After a short city tour we ended up at the Christkindlsmarkt (that’s how they call the X-mas market there). The whole city center is decorated in a very Christmas-like style with all these old houses and churches, it looks pretty cool. Like from one of these X-mas books.

The night before it had snowed a bit, so everything looked really nice. The cool thing about the market are the 24 living and singing angels. They stand on the balcony and in the windows of the medieval City Hall , which is at one side of the X-mas market square, on the other side, there is a large building is transformed into a giant Advent calendar.

After I had found out that Munich’s specialty are beer and meat I was told that Augsburg’s special (X-mas) food seems to be a hamburger bun-size dumpling drizzled in plenty of steaming-hot vanilla sauce with Glühwein. Glühwein sounds like wine, but it’s not, it’s an interesting tasting type of hot mulled wine. But don’t drink too much of it. After drinking some… cups of it, we felt pretty happy.

After the market, we went to a nice tiny, cosy bar in the old town. As it was soooo cold outside, we really enjoy the rich pasta we had there. Augsburg is so great in winter, it really looks like one of these towns from these kitsch X-mas books. This trips was wonderful me, as I had never seen snow before in Mexico. I think everyone back home is gonna be jealous about my trip here. ;)
