There are the following modal verbs in Kurdish:

Examples:

Kurdish

Divê ez bixwînim.

I must go.

Îcaze bidî ku herim?

Am I allowed to go? / Do you allow me to go?

Ez mecbûr herim.

I must go.

and:

Kurdish

Ez te nihilim ku tu herî

I don’t let you go.

Tu min dihilî ku bixwim?

Do you let me eat?

 

Modal Verb - Negation

Kurdish

English

Gerek tu bifroşî.

You have to sell.

Ne gerek e tu bifroşî.

You don’t have to sell.

Gerek tu nefroşî.

You don’t have to sell.

and:

Kurdish

Lazim e (ku) ew çay çêke.

He has to make tea.

Ne lazim e ew çay çêke.

He doesn’t have to make tea..
