Adjective - Grading

In Italian adjectives are graded with “più” / “meno”.

Positive	grande
Comparative	più / meno grande
Superlative	il / la più / meno grande

Example in a sentence:

	Example	English
Positive	È grande. È così grande come me.	He is big / tall. He is as big / tall as me.
Comparative	È più grande di me. È meno grande di me.	He is bigger / taller than me. He is less big / tall than me.
Superlative	È il plus grande. È la meno grande.	He is the biggest / tallest. He is the least big / tall one.

Grading - irregular forms

Positive	Comparative	Superlative	English
buono / a	migliore più buono / a	il / la ottimo / a, il / la più buono / a	good, better, best
cattivo / a	peggiore	le / la pessimo / a	bad, worse, worst
grande	maggiore più grande	il / la massimo / a, il / la più grande	big, bigger, biggest
piccolo / a	minore più piccolo / a	il / la minimo / a, il / la più piccolo / a	small, smaller, smallest

Conjunctions of Grading

With the following conjunctions you can express grading:
- così ... come (as ... as)
- tanto ... come (as ... as)
- più ... che / di (more ... than)
- meno ... che / di (less ... than)

Example:

Italian	English
È lenta come il suo amico. È bella come una rosa.	She is as slow as her friend. She is as beautiful as a rose.
È (così) grande come la sua amica.	She is as tall as her friend.
Questa soluzione è meno intelligente che l’altra.	This solution is less intelligent than the other one.
